Nevada is a semi-arid state, doted by mountains and deserts, its name means
snow in Spanish. First explored by the Spanish in 1776 and in 1826 and
1827 Jedediah Smith opened the state to trading. The U.S. acquired the
region in 1848 at the end of the Mexican War and in 1849 the first
settlement at Mormon Station, now Genoa was established. Today, Nevada is
know for its legalized casinoes, and resorts at Las Vegas and Reno. Ghost
towns, rodeos, skiing, golfing and fishing are available throughout the
state. Although gaming is the primary industry, mining, manufacturing,
agriculture, warehousing and trucking are an important part of the state's
economy. @
